Viral Gastroenteritis (an inflammation of the inside lining of the gastrointestinal tract) is caused by two viruses
rotavirus

Double stranded RNA (dsRNA) virus

Virus shed is feces of infected individuals. Transmitted when people ingest food or water contaminated with feces of an infected individual.
Incubation period 2 days
Signs and Symptoms:
Watery diarrhea, vomiting, fever, abdominal pain. May last 3-8 days and lead to dehydration.
Treat symptoms, no antiviral medications available
Rotavirus vaccine available (3 shot series 90% effective)

Single stranded RNA (ssRNA) virus
Highly contagious
The virus is found in the vomit and feces of infected people. Outbreaks can occur from eating food or drinking liquids that are contaminated with the virus, touching objects or surfaces with the virus on them and putting your fingers in your mouth, sharing utensils, etc.
Incubation period 24-48 hours; can occur in 12 hours
Signs and Symptoms:
Vomiting, watery diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, usually last approximately 24-72 hours
