POLIOMYELITIS

Single stranded RNA (ssRNA) virus
Transmitted fecal-oral via fecal contaminated food or water; contact with human feces. Can be transmitted by respiratory droplets but this is not common.
Signs and Symptoms:
None in 72 out of 100 people. 4-8% of infected people have fatigue, fever, nausea, headache, stiffness in neck and back, pain in limbs. Less than 1% the infection causes paralysis; 5-10% of paralyzed patients die due to paralysis of respiratory muscles.
Testing looks for antibodies in the blood, culture
