INFECTIOUS MONONUCLEOSIS

Infectious mononucleosis = Disease

Epstein-Barr virus = virus

Double stranded DNA (dsDNA) virus

In U.S. 95% of adults ages 35-40 have been infected with the Epstein-Barr virus

Person to person transmission via saliva (fomites) is most common. Can be transmitted by blood, semen, transplanted organs.

Incubation period 4-6 weeks

Signs and Symptoms:

Sore throat, enlarged lymph nodes, fever, fatigue, swollen liver, rash

Testing looks for antibodies in the blood

Resolves in 2-4 weeks

Goes latent and can reactivate

No vaccine, treat symptoms
