MUMPS

Mumps = Disease

Mumps virus = virus

Single stranded (ssRNA) virus

Transmitted via respiratory droplets, fomites (contagious before the gland swells)

Incubation period about 12-25 days (average 16-18 days)

Signs and Symptoms:

Fever, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, loss of appetite, swelling and pain in parotid (salivary) gland. May be asymptomatic or have very mild signs and symptoms.

Testing looks for antibodies in the blood, culture, PCR

Complications:

  • inflammation of testes (rare in kids, 30-40% adult post pubertal males)
  • brain 2 per 100,000; 1% fatal
  • deafness 1 in 20,000
  • mastitis in 30% of women over 15

MMR vaccine (2 shot series 78% effective after one dose 88% effective after two doses)
