34 Writing Process: Discussion of Evaluation Practice: A Case Study

Introduction: You are a part of a districtwide, national, and international effort to increase access to education and empower students through “open pedagogy.” Open pedagogy is a “free access” educational practice that places you – the student – at the center of your own learning process in a more engaging, collaborative learning environment. The ultimate purpose of this effort is to achieve greater social justice in our community in which the work can be freely shared with the broader community. This is a renewable assignment that is designed to enable you to become an agent of change in your community through the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For this work, you will integrate the disciplines of composition, reading, and nursing to achieve SDG #10, which is Reduced Inequalities. Click here to learn more about SDG #10  here.

Case Study

Sarah is 18 years old, she lives in the rural South, and just graduated high school. Sarah plans on living at home so she can work and save money for college.

Sarah’s biological sex is female, though identifies as male. Sarah has not confided to anyone about gender identity in fear of being ostracized from her family and friends. As a result, Sarah has become increasingly isolated, does not socialize with peers, she is depressed, and started drinking alcohol regularly. Her physical and mental health has declined and refuses to go to the clinic due to the anxiety she has about her body and generalized anxiety.

The Task

  • How will you help Sarah find resources? (process)
  • Give an example of a good community resource that she could use by posting a link to its website or a photo of a brochure.
  • What determines a “good” resource?  (evaluation criteria)
  • Using what you know about evaluation, justify the use of a community resource.  Convince Sarah of the value of the resource.

Remember to post your response by the due date and respond to at least two (2) postings from your colleagues within 48 hours.  Respond to more than two colleagues to earn the full points.  A response can be a comment, a meaningful question, simply agreeing with the posting, adding something to the posting, or sharing the same experience.

College-level writing is formal, contains complete sentences without sentence or spelling errors, and has a professional tone.  “Hey” is too casual for this forum.  Your responses to colleagues could be a comment or a question.  “Yes, I agree” does not constitute a complete response eligible for full points.

Our discussions will be respectful and friendly.  We won’t use sarcasm or slang.
