Welcome to ENG102 Contextualized for Health Sciences

This pressbook was developed through the Summer 2022 Maricopa OpenSkill Fellowship.  My interest in OER aligns with my philosophy of increasing equity and access for ALL community college students.

Although I have compiled and arranged the materials here, most are NOT my original work.  These pages represent the best of OER.  The majority of the materials come from the OpenSkill CCP: English Composition II.

OpenSkill is supported by a federal grant and focuses on active learning and essential workforce skills.  Click HERE to learn more about OpenSkill.  In addition to creation and use of specific learning tools, the project also developed an entire content package aligned with existing Maricopa course competencies for ENG102:

  1. Analyze the nature of critical reading and its application to life in the contemporary world. (I)
  2. Apply critical thinking techniques to a variety of materials and purposes for reading. (II)
  3. Identify the structure of an argument. (III)
  4. Evaluate material to ascertain tone, purpose, audience, and context. (IV)
  5. Interpret assumptions, bias, author`s point of view, and connotative meanings in text. (V)
  6. Determine and analyze common errors in reasoning. (VI)
  7. Evaluate the nature and accuracy of evidence given in support of an author`s argument. (VII)
  8. Gather and utilize internet, database and print resources to evaluate the accuracy of information. (VIII)
  9. Interpret, evaluate, and analyze internet, database, and print resources through the critical reading and critical thinking processes.(IX)
  10. Synthesize multiple sources to evaluate the merits of arguments. (X)

Many of the OpenSkill content package lessons are based on the resources found in the Excelsior Online Writing Lab.

Unit and Module names and numbers remain the same.  Most of the content chapters follow the same format:

  1. Essay Overview
  2.  Techniques
  3.  Think Before You Begin
  4.  What Does It Look Like?
  5.  See It in Practice
  6.  See It Across the Disciplines
  7.  Wrapping Up

Contextualized information has been added at the end of the book.  As a member of the Glendale Health Sciences Field of Interest, I have worked with other faculty to find resources and readings of interest to future nurses, nutrition majors, and physical fitness coaches.

This pressbook is intended to be used in conjunction with a Canvas shell with specific assignments contextualized for Health Sciences.  Please direct any questions about adapting the materials to lori.walk@gccaz.edu.

Thanks to Matthew Bloom, Stephanie Green, and Filippo Posta for facilitating our interesting work together.  Thanks also to Christine Jones, OER Coordinator at Glendale Community College, for her feedback and support. For more information about creating your own pressbook, refer to the Maricopa MOD Press information page.

Best wishes in your quest to find and use no-cost materials with our students.
