Tech Set up for In-person MAT 103

Description

Course: MAT103 (College Mathematics Preparation)

Modality: In-person (In-person and Asynchronous)

General approach: The course I taught was the first 8-week course during Spring 2023. This course is the prerequisite course for College Mathematics. I chose to run the course using MAO with an in-person and asynchronous component. Students that did not come to class were expected to complete the in-class assignments on their own and submit them to me online.

Equipment

Because I was not teaching a Live Online component to the class, there was no special in-class equipment. I utilized the Internet and the MOER platform for content delivery and assignment collection.

Programs

No programs were used.

Reflection

What worked?

Students who did not attend were asked to a) contact me in advance and let me know and b) submit in-class assignments online. Only about half the students who did not attend a given class would let me know. Also, only about half would submit their in-class assignments online. While I did not feel that communication was the best and assignment completion were not the best, in terms of what they missed in class, most of the students who chose not to attend did end up being successful in the course.

What can be improved?

I am thinking of including a Live Online component in the fall when I teach the course again. I did have a student that drove to SCC from downtown Phoenix. Having a Live Online option would probably have worked well for her.
