Tech Set up for In-person ALT 100, CRE 101, and RDG 100LL

Description

Course: ALT 100, CRE 101, RDG 100LL

Modality: In-person using MAO (with live online and asynchronous options)

Equipment

No special equipment was used. The standard instructor’s station that had two monitors was used. It was very helpful to have two monitors.  The room at Phoenix College (F106) was also equipped with a camera and room microphones. Google Chromebooks were used to aid students attending live online.

Programs

  • Canvas
  • Google Suite (Slides, Docs, Sheets)
  • Slido for assessments
  • QUIZZ

Reflection

What worked?

I believe that offering flexible options for students is addressing equity issues for students. The students who have chosen to attend live online are students who have determined the option is helping them with family, transportation costs, etc.

What can be improved?

Unfortunately, there are students who have attended live online and did not submit the work that is due during the class so in essence, they are showing up for live online and do not follow through with uploading documents. Students who attend asynchronous classes, and have to submit work within 24 hours are also not following through and therefore, are not doing well in the course.  My feeling is that the students who are in beginning classes (ALT 100) lack the technical skills and understanding of what is meant by live online, in person, and asynchronous.  They don’t understand the requirements of each option and they don’t understand how to function in an asynchronous environment.  Any issues with the technology are on my end. I started to bring in Google Chromebooks from our lab to set up in class and because they are set up for labs, I could not sign in with my faculty account therefore I was unable smoothly use breakout rooms for some of the group activities. The students were very flexible but I do need to improve how I set up group activities and be more prepared.
