MAO Pedagogical Tools for Hybrid CFS 176

Multiple Attendance Option

For my three courses of Child Development (Monday Hybrid, Thursday Hybrid, and Fully Online – Asynchronous) students were offered the option to attend either of the in-person classes as well as access interactive online content.

Description

I am an Early Childhood Education Faculty at Mesa Community College. Because of the design of our hybrid courses (one class meeting for one hour and fifteen minutes each week), I have discovered that a traditional lecture format is not a good use of our time (in my opinion). Consequently, I have all of my class lectures online in the Canvas course (for all of my course sections). In-person sessions are utilized for deeper dives into course content and interactions with classmates. Online versions of these opportunities are available in my fully online class. In addition to my hybrid class sessions, I have an “open lab” time in the classroom that is open to all students.

This semester I created detailed course calendars for all of my course sections (hybrid and online). I have a shared calendar for my hybrid courses and I show the open lab time on all calendars. On the first day of class, I will share the opportunity for students to be more flexible in how they choose to attend in-person class meetings if they desire. At this time I will not need to connect synchronously with students online during the hybrid class sessions but I have several options for doing so if needed on a case-by-case basis.

I applied for MCC’s iBelong Student Success Initiative and was accepted for my two hybrid courses. This means that each of my students will be able to check out an iPad for the semester. As a part of the iBelong Student Success Initiative, I am going to encourage students to help me to think outside the box in terms of bringing class interactions to life in the online asynchronous environment. I am looking forward to what evolves. Please see the Tech Set Up of my class for more info.
