Tech Set Up for In-person ART 142

Description

Course: ART 142 – Introduction to Digitial Photography

Modality: In-person (with online options)

General approach: The course was set up to allow students to miss lectures if needed for illness or other life events. The lecture classes were previously recorded and placed “On Demand” for students to view if they missed our lecture. Additionally, if students missed they had to participate in an activity that people in the classroom completed during class time.

Equipment

The classroom is set up as a computer lab so students can work on the computers or follow along during the lecture. Slides were posted on Canvas before the lecture was given. In the classroom, I use a projector, computer, and Google Slides.

Programs

A lecture page in Canvas is set up to host the OnDemand Lecture video, made with Canvas Studio, and the slides from my Google Slides presentation. I use Canvas Studio to track students who watched the OnDemand version of the lecture. I often use JamBoards or Discussions Board for students to identify what was discussed in the lecture.

The photograph illustrates where I placed the Google Slides Presentation with the OnDemand button below. The videos I show during the lecture are below for students to revisit.

Reflection

What worked?

  • Having the lecture OnDemand for students to view worked really well. Without much extra effort on my end, I could provide them with the content they missed quickly.
  • Discussion boards where students had to complete an assignment/activity to show their knowledge about the lecture worked well. These became homework assignments for students who attended in person or online. Both had the same due date.
  • Students appreciated having the flexibility

What can be improved?

  • Adding a course note that indicates that this course could be attended in a MAO manner as students didn’t know what that meant and they all signed up for an in-person class. Not a lot of students took advantage of the asynchronous options.
  • Listing the course as a hybrid modality vs. in person
  • Using the newly installed camera/technology to create a true MAO experience for our students
