Courses taught using MAO – Spring, 2023
MAO (Multiple Attendance Options)
MAO (Multiple Attendance Options) offers students options for attendance. Please read and understand each of the options.
Students are required to attend the first TWO weeks of class IN PERSON. (January 17, 19, 24, 26)
You may not attend Live Online OR Asynchronous more than once a week without prior approval.
You can only complete assignments Asynchronously a total of 4 times during the semester.
Additional online work outside of the class sessions is required regardless of how you attend class. In other words, even if you attend in person, you will have assignments, etc. that will be completed, on your own, in Canvas outside of class time.
In Person Option
- Attending class in person is the best option and offers the best path to success. Students should make this their default method for attendance.
- Requirements of attending class in person:
- Students will be on-time, be an active participant, and stay the entire length of the class.
- Students will remove headphones or earbuds from both ears while in class.
Live Online Option
- If you cannot attend class in person, you have the option to participate live online during the regularly scheduled time of class.
- Live online means you will access a link to the class and you will be able to see, hear and participate in the class virtually.
Requirements for attending live online:
- Students will be on-time, be an active participant, and stay the entire length of the class.
- Students are required to have their cameras on during the entire length of the class.
- Students are required to have a camera, speakers, microphone, and internet.
- Students are required to be dressed appropriately.
Asynchronous Option (Can only attend 4 times in the semester.)
- If you cannot attend class in person OR log in and attend live online, you have the option to complete the assignments asynchronously in Canvas. Attending asynchronously should be reserved for emergencies.
Requirements for asynchronous attendance:
- You are expected to watch the ENTIRE length of the recorded lecture. This is equivalent to your participation in the face-to-face class.
- You have 24 hours to complete the In-Class Assignment you missed. This will not be accepted late.
- You are expected to log into Canvas and complete substantial work approximately every day.
- You should also be prepared to participate in group activities that were completed in the in- person class and/or live online class with others who have chosen to attend asynchronously.
ENG 102
Spring 2023 (Brittney Sifford, EMCC)
Student Expectations: Attendance and active participation are necessary to be successful in this class. While there is not a grade associated with attendance, missing class content can impact your learning experience and overall grade. Four unexcused absences can result in your removal from the course.
Multiple Attendance Options: This class offers an alternative form of attendance. If you miss an in-person class session, but can complete the coursework asynchronously online, within 48 of the class session, you will receive credit for attendance on that day. You may complete four class sessions this way. Asynchronous participation does not count as an excused or unexcused absence. Because you are participating, you are attending. If you plan on being significantly late, or needing to leave significantly early (more than 10 minutes), you should plan to attend asynchronously that day.
There will be an Agenda posted on Canvas for every class meeting. If you are participating online, you should complete the Agenda Reflection assignment for that day. In addition, you should complete any assignments given in class. Please note, that in-person attendees may not have a physical assignment to submit, but online attendees will always need to submit the Agenda Reflection.
You do not need to provide any documentation or ask permission to use your Multiple Attendance Option, but you are encouraged to check in with me on that day. This option will become available to all students in this class beginning in Week 2 – all students must attend in-person during the first week of class and on the day of our Final Exam.
More information on official absences can be found here: https://district.maricopa.edu/regulations/admin-regs/section-2/2-3
Instructor Expectations: I will give you as much notice as possible if and when I have to miss a class. Any work will be available to you on Canvas, and I will be checking my messages frequently.

Instructional Contact Hours
Instructional Contact Hours (Seat Time)
This is a three (3) credit-hour course. Plan to spend at least three hours on course content and six hours on homework weekly. Accelerated courses will require additional time per week.
This is a hybrid course, meaning that it includes face-to-face class meetings on campus at the time listed in the class schedule. The other part will be held online asynchronously through our Canvas course. Students enrolling in a hybrid class acknowledge they already possess the skills described in the Minimum Computer and Technology Requirements.
Multiple Attendance Options (MAO)
Multiple Attendance Options (MAO) offers students options for attendance. Please read and understand each of the options.
Students are required to attend the first session of class IN PERSON.
In Person Options:
Attending class in person is the best option and offers the best path to success. Students should make this their default method for attendance. You will notice that our course is combined with another hybrid course. The expectation is that you attend our in person session on the day that you have registered for. If you find yourself in a situation where you cannot attend your in person session, you may attend the other scheduled session for the week. Additionally, many of the in person activities may have a virtual component. Please reach out to your instructor for access. Finally, please check the schedule for open lab times if you would like some extra work time with the instructor.
Tickets In and Tickets Out:
Tickets in and tickets out are utilized each class meeting in order to evaluate your progress in the course and help you to stay on pace.

Attendance Policy – Hybrid with Asynchronous MAO
This is a hybrid course with an asynchronous multiple attendance option (MAO). Attendance and active participation, as well as completing at-home activities and assignments, are required to be successful in this class.
Attendance is graded. The primary attendance modality is hybrid – students should plan to attend class in person if possible. In-class activities will also be graded for credit. Classes will be recorded and posted after each session. Students who, for any reason, are not able to attend class may view the class recordings to complete in-class activities. Asynchronous attendance must be arranged prior to the beginning of class; please notify the instructor in advance if you will not be able to attend the hybrid class. Asynchronous students must submit in-class assignments within 4 days of the class to receive credit.
All students are required to attend the first week of classes in person.

Zoom Meeting Info: Meeting ID – xxxxxxxxx Passcode – xxxxxxxxx
Meeting Days: (class meeting days)

Participation is useful in determining how well students are comprehending the material. The more people participate in class and demonstrate how well they are working with the material, the easier students may find the exams to be.
In-Person Participation: Working problems at the board, explaining your solutions (not just giving answers) to the class (including virtual students), asking questions of others’ solutions, answering questions in class, collaborating with other students during class.
Live-Online Participation: Working problems in your notebook or using the virtual whiteboard as in-person students are at the boards, explaining your solutions (not just giving answers) to the class (including in-person students), answering questions in class, collaborating with other students in breakout rooms, posting pictures of (or typing) your solutions on the MOER forums.
In addition, any student may engage in respectful discussion about how current scientific, social, political, or economic events relate to the content we have covered recently in class, or engage in respectful discussion about how something personal in their life relates to the content we have covered recently in class.

JW Gaberdiel (GateWay Community College)
This course has “Multiple Attendance Options” (MAO): you can attend class entirely online (asynchronous), or in person, or live online (synchronous). However you choose to attend class, all assignments and tests are completed online through your Canvas page.
Online Asynchronous: If you choose the online option, all of the course materials are already available in Canvas: you watch the lectures at the www.Loom.com website at your convenience and complete all assignments and tests in Canvas by the due date. You can ask all of your questions on the Canvas Discussion Forum, which I check daily. You have the option to attend the class in person if you wish.
In Person or Live Online: Monday & Wednesday, 11:00am – 12:50pm, IE 2211
If you choose to attend class in person (or live online by logging in to our google meets), you are responsible for watching the lecture videos online before coming to class. This is known as a “flipped classroom”: you watch the lecture before class, then we use class time as collaborative effort for me to answer your questions about lecture and homework. You are responsible for having a list of your questions ready when you walk into class (if you have questions about the lecture videos, it is helpful if you have the timestamps). Your in person attendance is not required, and I will not keep track of absences/tardies.
