MAO Pedagogical Tools for Hybrid ENG 102

Multiple Attendance Option

Students have the flexibility to choose between In-Person or Live Online instruction for each Tuesday class session throughout the semester. Additional online work outside of these class sessions is required. What that means is students may choose to attend class on Tuesdays at 11:30 am in person in the HT2-150 classroom or they can attend via the Zoom meeting room at the same time. Regardless of the choice, students will also be responsible for completing the online coursework in Canvas each week. Students do not need to inform the instructor of their choice, and attendance will be recorded in Canvas.

After completion of the first two modules (6 weeks), students will have an additional option to move completely online and choose not to attend live Tuesday class sessions. This option is only available to students who at that point in the semester are earning an A or B and are on track with their research projects. If students choose this option, they are still responsible for completing the online coursework in Canvas each week and communicating with the instructor in the scheduled research prospectuses, which may require them to meet online with the instructor at a scheduled time that works for the student.

Description

I use Canvas, Zoom, Remind, NoodleTools, and Lumio. Although the course is hybrid, 100% of the course content is online, so there are video lectures using Canvas Studio, Softchalk, and Articulate lessons for students to complete on Mondays. These lessons cover course content for the week, and they are auto-scored and count for Monday’s online attendance. The lessons provide students with the knowledge needed to complete the week’s assignment.

In class on Tuesday, we use Zoom and Lumio. Lumio is a digital learning tool for transforming lessons into active, collaborative learning experiences that engage students on their own devices. Instead of trying to get students in person to engage with students in a Zoom call, I use Lumio where they all engage with each other from their own computers. I create the weekly lesson in Lumio and start the lesson when class begins. Students log in on their own devices (home computer or classroom desktop), and when I advance the page/slide on the lesson, all the devices advance. When I stop for feedback or student activity in class, students are then presented with a prompt to participate. I mix up the activities. Sometimes they are digital and other times they are face-to-face activities. They do the digital activities from their own devices, and I can see all the work on my screen. I can display individual student responses on the screen in the classroom or share a compilation of responses. The last slide/page of the class lesson is always the exit ticket. The ticket has three columns: 3 Facts, 2 Questions, and 1 Opinion. They have to add 3 things to any column. I use this data to take attendance.
