MAO Pedagogical Tools for In-person MAT 256 & 257
Multiple Attendance Option
In-Person (primary modality) with asynchronous as a secondary option
Description
My course incorporates the flipped model classroom, with a little twist. Students are required to view a “preview assignment” which is aligned with the upcoming class and the competencies being covered. Students view the preview slides that give a synopsis of the lesson and then respond to a question of whether they will be attending class asynchronously or synchronously. If students decide to be asynchronous there are some additional assignments they must complete and upload to Canvas. Those students who are present complete the same assignment(s) in class. Here is a rating scale that we use for each topic:
Here are the questions students answer in Canvas after viewing the preview assignment:
Pedagogical Approach
Students are expected to keep an interactive notebook. Whether they are asynchronous or synchronous, all interactive notebooks are required along with assignments, activities, and notes. This is one way I am trying to create the same experience for both students (asynchronous and synchronous). These interactive notebooks are submitted electronically twice a semester.
There are two PowerPoints created for each lesson, asynchronous and synchronous PowerPoints. Asynchronous PowerPoints are more detailed and give solutions to problems. Synchronous slides do not have the same details since there is live instruction given by me.
Synchronous students come to class with their interactive notebooks and packets (these are given on the first day of class). Content is covered using group and individual activities. Manipulatives are used in class to give students a hands-on experience.
Asynchronous students who decide to be asynchronous for a lesson will view the asynchronous slides that walk them through all the same activities, using virtual manipulatives (click here for the link).
