MAO Pedagogical Tools for In-person MAT 213 and 217

Multiple Attendance Option

In-person (primary modality) OR Live online OR Asynchronous Online, all at once.

The key pedagogical shift I use in my Math classroom is:   Flipping My Classroom:
All of my lecture videos are pre-recorded and available online for all students at the start of the semester.  Whether students attend in person or live online, they are expected to watch the lecture videos Before attending class and to have already taken notes.  That way their attendance in class will be their Second Exposure to the material (after already watching my videos) and we can all focus on clarifying our understanding by asking questions and practicing problems.  Sure, I can review any portions of the lesson during class, but I will not “re-deliver” a full lecture.  Class time is a hands-on workshop for practice, not passive reception of information. Since all of my lecture videos are pre-recorded, the class sessions themselves (whether in person or online) are Additional practice sessions, which are also recorded, so that even the asynchronous students can watch these videos as well, in addition to the regular lectures.

Description

Rather than write on a whiteboard, I have a surface pro tablet that wirelessly projects onto the projectors in the room.  That way I can walk around the room while writing on my tablet, and I’m not stuck at the board or even at the front of the room.  While writing on my tablet, I am also live streaming using Google Meet and recording my screen/voice using the screencasting software www.Loom.com.  That way, students can watch online Live, or watch online Later.
