Tech Set Up for Hybrid MAT 256 and 257

Description

Course: MAT 256 & MAT 257

Modality: Hybrid (Asynchronous/Synchronous)

All classes for the courses can be taken completely in person or online. Students also have the flexibility to attend or not attend specific classes.

Equipment

The classroom is set up for MAO, but it is not necessarily how I run the MAO class. I use a projector, computer, and PowerPoint.  If students are asynchronous, they will view the PowerPoint in Canvas and upload pictures of their assignments in Canvas that the others finished in class.

Students will need a computer and a smartphone to take photographs and videos so they can upload them to Canvas. Some assignments do require a video, and many assignments require a jpeg upload.

Programs

PowerPoints and Videos of lessons are created specifically for those students who choose to attend asynchronously. There are assignments they must complete and upload separately from those who attend in person. Likewise, students who attend in person view a different PowerPoint geared towards an in-person experience.

Programs students need:  Remind app, the student Canvas app, and the Adobe PDF app.

Reflection

What worked?

I think that the Multiple Attendance Option (MA0) is going to be the way of teaching post-secondary education.  It’s definitely the cutting edge of using technology and adapting to post covid education. All students are required to attend the first day of class. Partly to introduce each other and to pick up their interactive notebook packets.  Students are required to keep an interactive notebook, in which they complete assignments throughout the course. Using interactive notebooks is a huge piece in this class. This is one attempt to give all students the same experience whether they are in their living room or able to attend class.

What can be improved?

I think there are many adjustments that I need to make, some videos explain a few concepts that I feel need to be better explained for those students who are asynchronous. I am being reflective and collaborating with other instructors to find ways to build a bridge between in-person and asynchronous so that those who aren’t coming to class are still able to participate in those deep conversations in the classroom.  Discussion boards are one way I am going to help close those gaps.
