Tech Set Up for In-person ENG 102
Description
Course: ENG 102
Modality: In-person
General approach: Students were allowed to attend class asynchronously four times in the semester. MAO usage was limited and in-person attendance was always the more encouraged option.
Equipment
No special equipment was used.
Programs
NoteJoy app. Every day, I created a note that listed our daily agenda. The agenda included links to any slideshows, web resources, etc. that we used in class. From there, I assigned four students to be the minute takers for each class meeting. They took notes for the whole class so that students attending asynchronously could read what happened. Although four were assigned, anyone could add to the note at any time, including me.
I also listed the work they were expected to complete outside of class. Additionally, I added a section at the bottom specifically for asynchronous attendees to streamline what they would need to complete to show their attendance.
Here is an example of a daily note. The bolded text is what I provided – students wrote everything else. The red text are links to other sources. On the left side, all of our daily notes are listed in reverse chronological order. Students also have access to their own private notebooks.
Reflection
What worked?
Students were the ones most accountable for their learning. The extra effort on my part was fairly minimal. They have expressed that they felt ownership in their and their peers’ education. NoteJoy itself is a great tool because users can share links, pictures, and videos, as well as notes; there is also a chat tool. There are several apps that have similar features.
What can be improved?
Students could definitely use more training in what notes are helpful and necessary, and what is just not needed.
