Module 2: Stereochemistry

Stereoisomers are interesting phenomenon that exist in nature, also have great impact on the properties of organic molecules. In this chapter, we will have in depth discussions on stereoisomers and stereochemistry.

Module 2 Learning Objectives

  1. Be able to identify stereogenic carbon atoms in a given structure.
  2. Be able to apply CIP rules and assign R or S to a stereogenic carbon.
  3. Be able to draw enantiomers for a chiral molecule.
  4. Be able to draw diastereomers for a chiral molecule with two or more carbon atoms.
  5. Be able to recognize the plane of symmetry in a meso isomer.
  6. Be able to draw all possible stereoisomers for a given molecule and identify the relationships between the isomers as enantiomeric, diastereomeric or meso.
  7. Be able to define specific rotation.
  8. Be able to solve for numerical problems that involve specific rotation.
