In the vast expanse of American literature lies a treasure trove of voices echoing through time, capturing the essence of a young nation’s tumultuous journey towards identity and purpose. Before the cannons of the Civil War thundered across the landscape, before the ink of the Declaration of Independence had dried, there existed a rich tapestry of narratives, poems, and essays that laid the foundation of American literary tradition. American Literature Before 1860 endeavors to illuminate this vibrant literary landscape, offering a curated anthology that spans the pre-Civil War era, a period teeming with the birth cries of a nation and the reverberations of its dreams, conflicts, and aspirations. Within these pages, readers will encounter the elegant prose of early settlers grappling with the challenges of a new land, the impassioned rhetoric of revolutionaries daring to defy tyranny, and the lyrical musings of poets enraptured by the beauty and promise of the American landscape. From the spiritual fervor of Puritan sermons to the philosophical inquiries of Transcendentalist thinkers, from the slave narratives that bear witness to the horrors of bondage to the romantic visions of a nation on the cusp of transformation, each selection in this anthology serves as a window into the soul of a nation in the making. As editors, our aim is not merely to present a chronological catalog of literary works but to offer a nuanced portrait of America’s literary heritage, one that reflects the complexities of its history, culture, and aspirations. Through careful selection and thoughtful curation, we hope to illuminate the diverse voices that contributed to the rich tapestry of American literature before 1860, inviting readers to engage with the past in ways that resonate with the present. Whether you are a seasoned scholar, a curious student, or simply a lover of literature, we invite you to embark on a journey through the pages of American Literature Before 1860 and discover the enduring legacy of American letters before the dawn of the Civil War.

This textbook was part of a grant supported project that remixed and reused existing OER materials, as well as created new content which emphasized cultural universals and culturally specific constructs in psychology. This textbook was created for an undergraduate course that appeals to psychology majors and non-majors because it meets several general education and transfer credit requirements. Additionally, our materials were aimed at meeting lower division curriculum needs where options for psychology and culture are limited.
