7 Plato’s Cave

You might be familiar with the ancient Greek philosopher Plato and his allegory of the cave. High school English teachers often introduce it to their students, and it’s a staple in most introduction to philosophy courses.

This allegory is found in Plato’s Republic as a dialogue between Plato’s teacher, Socrates, and another gentleman named Glaucon. You can read the dialogue from the MIT website here. Please note, you’ll want to begin with the section “And now, I said,” to “private life must have his eye fixed…”

You can also watch an animated version of the allegory here.

As you either read the allegory or watch the video version, think about these questions and write out your answers.
