Español 101

Español 101 is an open educational resource that can be used with various approaches to support beginning learners of Spanish. This interactive learning textbook is designed to guide learners in their Spanish language learning journey through a critical and intercultural lens and provide meaningful opportunities to explore, practice, and improve their ability to read, write, speak, and understand Spanish.

This OER textbook provides students access to interactive activities to reinforce their learning of basic Spanish vocabulary and grammatical points. The activities presented in each chapter are contextualized and interconnected through the Spanish language and culture. Español 101 offers practice and guidance in listening, writing, reading, and speaking Spanish. Each chapter includes thematic vocabulary, sequenced grammar instruction, self-check practices and fun activities, open-form communicative activities, writing assignments, reading passages exploring various aspects of life and culture in Spanish-speaking countries, and a cultural section exploring general information about the Spanish-speaking world. The book includes engaging images, audio, and videos. All vocabulary and reading passages include audio files to practice pronunciation and listening comprehension.

Español 101 was created for students taking the first semester of Spanish. It is intended as an introductory Spanish course that covers level 1 (SPA 101) at community colleges. All resources found here are free! Instructors can use it as is, download a PDF of all the activities, or incorporate it in the LMS of their college (including Canvas). Furthermore, instructors can adapt, edit, modify, and create new versions.
