One Author

In general, in-text citations require the author’s last name and the year when available. There are multiple correct ways to do this when you have one author:

One author in-text citation:

(Author, year)

One scholar argued that it is impossible to measure social class (Calvert, 1982).

One author, in-text citation with the author included in the sentence:

(year)

Calvert (1982) argued that it is impossible to measure social class.

If citing two sources in one sentence, each with one author, alphabetize the sources and use a semi-colon to separate the two sources:

(Author, year; Author; year)

(Calvert, 1987; Smith, 2003)
