From the Valley of Echoes to the Summit of Insight: A Research Expedition in Communication

Executive Summary

This project represents a structured research endeavor undertaken as part of a Communication Research Methods course. Conceptually framed as an adventurer on an expedition, the journey begins in the “Valley of Echoes,” a metaphor for the uncertainty and exploratory nature of early-stage research, and culminates at the “Summit of Insight” symbolizing the achievement of informed understanding. The central goal of this project was to create a comprehensive, accessible textbook for undergraduate students studying social science and communication research.

Titled ‘The Art of Communication Inquiry: Theory and Practice,’ the textbook is designed to help students bridge theoretical concepts with practical, real-world applications. It emphasizes the importance of guiding students to not only understand but also apply communication theories in their everyday lives. A key motivation behind this project was to address the prohibitively high cost of traditional research methods textbooks by offering an affordable alternative through the open educational resource (OER) marketplace.

This collaborative initiative was made possible through the efforts of an outstanding team: Stephanie Williams, Manager of e-Learning at Mesa Community College, whose deep knowledge, expertise, and stellar leadership in OER development was instrumental in shaping the content; and Ryan Matthews, MCC’s e-Learning Instructional Services Coordinator, whose technical and design expertise brought the textbook to life in its digital form. Together, we incorporated a range of methodological approaches including quantitative, qualitative, and critical paradigms to provide a well-rounded understanding of diverse research strategies and the research process from start to finish.

Grounded in foundational theoretical frameworks such as symbolic interactionism, communication privacy management, expectancy violations theory, communication accommodation theory, mass media theory, culture-centered perspectives and other social scientific theories, this project aspires to foster both conceptual mastery and meaningful application in the study of communication in a variety of contexts from interpersonal, intercultural, organizational, mass media, and language (verbal and nonverbal). To build the textbook’s content, with Stephanie’s tremendous help, I combined the strategic remixing of existing open educational resources (OER) with original authored material, ensuring both accuracy and relevance while tailoring the content to the needs of undergraduate communication students. Ultimately, the goal was to produce an open-source textbook that integrates both theoretical foundations and applied practices in communication research.

The final phase of the project focused on the development of interactive, H5P-based learning components designed to enhance student engagement and reinforce key concepts. Through this work, the project highlights the importance of persistence, adaptability, and methodological rigor as essential elements of meaningful academic inquiry.
