Equity in Mathematics through Desmos Graphing Calculator

Executive Summary

Scottsdale Community College created instructional videos for their MAT 12X Math Courses (Intermediate Algebra). Many of the videos they created were designed to teach students how to use the TI-84 Graphing Calculator. The videos were done well.

I have been saving my students a ton of money by allowing them to not purchase a textbook, but to instead use the instructional videos along with guided video notes that accompany the videos.

In an effort to save my students even more money as well as to learn newer current technologies I have taught my students to use the Desmos Graphing Calculator along with the TI-84 Graphing Calculator. In the past semesters, I have been able to show these new technologies to my in person students, but it has been harder for my online students since there are not instructional videos yet with those same examples. While there are instructional videos out there using Desmos, there are not instructional videos for these specific problems that match my students’ guided notes.

Therefore, I created videos parallel to those current TI-84 Graphing Calculator videos that show how to use the Desmos Graphing Calculator. I created the videos to show my students how to use the newer technology, Desmos Graphing Calculator. These videos will help my students connect the two technologies of the TI-84 Graphing Calculator and the Desmos Graphing Calculator. This will also save my students money since they will not be required to purchase a TI-84 Graphing Calculator.

I created OER Textbook sections for each of the videos that I made. Each section has video notes to go along with the videos. I converted the original video notes into Google Docs so that they can continuously be updated and the students will have access to the newest version as it is being updated. The videos are linked in the video notes. I also included answer keys to go along with each major section of the video notes. Some also have additional extra calculator resources. The videos are also available on YouTube so that a larger audience outside of Maricopa Community Colleges can also access them as well.
