Beginning and Intermediate Spanish OER Textbook

Albert Shank

Executive Summary

These two textbooks are designed to be used for conversational practice in the classroom and live online. Fully online students will also have access to the books and may use them to converse with other students or with the tutors.

The reason why I wanted to create these books was because I wanted to have a central place for students to access all of the interactive activities we do in class. This includes structured conversations, surveys, picture descriptions, videos followed by questions, and readings followed by questions. In the past 2.5 years since we started implementing OER Canvas courses for all SPA classes, our in person and live online classes did not have a very organized and user friendly set of activities that were designed to create conversation in the classroom. Students had to download many different documents on any given night, and it was clumsy and difficult to go from document to document both online and in class. With a textbook, we are able to seamlessly move from activity to activity, and it also simplifies the lesson plan. In addition, it makes it easier for me to share the pages online with the students who are logging in to live online. In addition, the H5P activities that are a part of MOD Press make the interaction much more effective and easy to use for the students both online and in the classroom.
