Intro to the Internet, the World Wide Web, and it’s Languages

Executive Summary

The Open Educational Resource Project at Mesa Community College (MCC) aims to remove barriers to success for students in the web design and development program. By diversifying learning resources and reducing reliance on the textbook, the project enhances the comprehensiveness and effectiveness of the learning experience. The textbook used in the course posed challenges due to cost, availability, and outdated content. In contrast, the online web design community offers abundant and accessible resources, such as MDN Web Docs, freeCodeCamp, and Github, providing up-to-date curriculum materials licensed under Creative Commons. These resources benefit from the expertise of a supportive community.

To support student success, the project incorporates ten practice projects from freeCodeCamp’s Responsive Web Design Certification, along with OER guides and walkthrough videos created by the author of the project. Additionally, certification projects are aligned with the specific competencies and learning objectives of CIS133DA. Students have the option to complete additional practices and projects for full certification. The main objective of the CIS133DA course is for students to build and publish a multi-page website. In support of that, document planning templates were developed as OER materials by the author of the project. The planning documents, videos, and project guides were directly intended to align with UDL guidelines and principles. Additionally, formative assessment tools using H5P activities were developed within chapters of the still-in-progress Maricopa Open Digital (MOD) Press OER textbook, Introduction to Web Design and Development by Juliet Crocco, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike. These activities foster critical thinking skills and ensure comprehension of web design concepts.

In conclusion, the Open Educational Resource Project at MCC eliminates barriers to success by enhancing the learning experience through diversified resources. Future improvements include transitioning practice projects to GitHub Classroom, which will provide enhanced collaboration and instructor interaction, transitioning all pieces of the project into the MOD Press OER textbook, and directly aligning program-level learning outcomes to course outcomes and assessments.
