K1: Quotation Marks – Direct Quotes

K1: Quotation Marks – Direct Quotes: Use double quotation marks to indicate direct quotes.  Use no quotation marks for indirect quotes or paraphrases.  See Writing for Success Section 3.4 pp. 114-115 or RULE 1 of the following: http://www.butte.edu/departments/cas/tipsheets/punctuation/quotation_marks.html

 

Direct Quote:

Consider the words of John F. Kennedy: “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.”

 

Indirect Quote:

John F. Kennedy was known for saying you should not ask for what your country can do for you but instead what you can do for your country.
