Welcome to your Volcanoes lab for this week! Here you will not only learn about the destructive power of volcanoes and their hazards but also the composition and different types of volcanoes. After all, not all volcanoes are the same – once we have an understanding of different volcano types, their eruption style, and hazards, we can better plan how to survive a volcanic eruption! Let’s go!

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After completing the exercises and reading the text in this chapter, you should be able to…

  • Describe the nature of magma and distinguish between the major type of volcanic cones
  • Explain the concept of magma viscosity and how it contributes to more or less explosive volcanic eruptions
  • Explain how scientists monitor volcanoes and predict volcanic eruptions
  • Identify major hazards associated with volcanoes
